چکیده

[1] Successfully predicting the phase and strength of the dominant winter mode of variability for the Northern Hemisphere (NAO/AO) is considered the most important future breakthrough in winter climate prediction; however skillful prediction of the index has been elusive. In this Letter we present a snow index constructed from observed summer and fall anomalies that is more highly correlated than the observed value of the winter AO with winter surface temperatures in the eastern United States. Ease of use and the potential for greater predictive skill could potentially render forecasting the phase and strength of the NAO/AO irrelevant as a tool for prediction of U. S. winter surface temperatures.

A new index for more accurate winter predictions

[1] Seasonal climate prediction remains a challenge. During Northern Hemisphere (NH) winter the large‐scale teleconnection pattern the Arctic Oscillation (AO) explains the largest fraction of temperature variance of any other known climate mode. However the Arctic Oscillation is considered to be a result of intrinsic atmospheric dynamics or chaotic behavior and therefore is unpredictable. Here ...

Atmospheric Controls on Eurasian Snow Extent

Composite analyses, based on weekly snow-cover charts, temperature, sea level pressure, cyclone tracks and a rotated PCA of daily filtered 700 hPa geopotential height are used to examine relationships between the dominant modes of low-frequency atmospheric variability and mid-winter snow extent over the Eurasian continent. Two of the circulation modes examined have been identified previously an...

Investigation of snow cover changes affected by climate change In North West of Iran

In this study in order to monitor snow cover, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) optical images were used, while for detection of snow covered areas, the  snow index-NDSI, was applied. The results showed - according to the climatic conditions of the region- during the following months: December, January, February and March, most of the area is covered by snow and the max...

Connectivity between Eurasian snow cover extent and Canadian snow water equivalent and river discharge

[1] We explore pan-Arctic climate connectivity by examining historical time series of satellite-based measurements of Eurasian snow cover extent and of observed Canadian snow water equivalent (SWE) and freshwater discharge, with a focus on the Churchill River Basin of Labrador and the Chesterfield Inlet Basin of Nunavut. Analysis of the data reveals statistically significant positive (negative)...

On the observed connection between Arctic sea ice and Eurasian snow in relation to the winter NAO

Many recent studies reveal that sea ice concentration (SIC) in the eastern Arctic and snow cover extent (SCE) over central Eurasia in late autumn are potential predictors of the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). We used maximum covariance analysis (MCA) to investigate the links between autumn SIC in the Barents-Kara Seas (BK) and SCE over Eurasia (EUR) with winter (DJF) sea level pressur...
